Last night the 2023 VMAs was broadcasted to thousands of eager viewers, and though the show itself had everyone talking the “Pink Carpet” left much to be desired and little to the imagination.

The main attention grabbing details came from the construction of the garments showcased and the material utilized by designers, with many celebs opting for more simpler looks and ensembles that caught the eye by way of draping, cut-outs, material manipulation, and showcasing the body.

Sheer was on the menu for many in attendance, and showing skin felt more-so mandatory than an option. From subtle cleavage and midriff baring ensembles to lots of leg and full on frontal nudity, the girls were out (literally and figuratively). Personally I loved every bit of it and thought the more body, the better.

However, even with the influx of areolas and bodacious bodies the carpet seemed a bit dull this year. It’s not to say there weren’t highlights at all but it seemed as though for

a good portion of attendees, they weren’t wearing the looks; the looks were wearing them. Outside of a few standouts color on the carpet was also a bit lacking, with shades of white and black popping up more than anything. As one IG user put it:

….Maybe boring was a better word for it(?)

All in all the looks were OKAY, with a few hits and quite a few misses. It’s unsure if the celebrities in attendance felt the same, but watching at home we definitely could tell the vibe was a bit stale on the Pink Carpet.

Best Dressed

Doechii in Dsquared2

An ode to early 2000’s VMAs looks mixed with her own personal attitude and flare made for one head turning ensemble. The arm warmers and cap + cigarette combo was just the needed touches to give a nostalgic yet flavorful taste to the artist’s already daring look.

Doja Cat in Monse

Before stepping on stage and putting on arguably the best performance of the night, Doja Cat stepped out in what could only be described as a webbed dress, distressed to oblivion. The styling of her makeup + jewelry is what really sealed the deal as the look nodded towards her upcoming album SCARLET and her arachnid-esque era.

Coco Jones in Moschino

Straight off the runway Coco bodied this black leather two piece ensemble and made it it her own. The skirt hits the floor right, the fit is immaculate, and the flipped bob is the perfect accent to finish off the look. Ms. Jones has been on a roll lately from NYFW to the Pink Carpet and I must say she’s bringing the heat!

Flo Milli in Area

As one of the few to show up in some color, Flo Milli served body and beauty in this two piece Area look. The sequined skirt and matching top in rose red complemented her skin nicely, while the fringe detailing at the bottom of the mini skirt that flowed into the floor gave the look a bit of movement and intrigue. Perfect for the occasion if you ask me.

Nicki Minaj in Saint Laurent + Louis Vuitton

The host of the night had many outfit changes as the show went on, but of the few the one that resonated the most with me (and the viewers apparently) is this look from St Laurent topped off with the LV shades. Though simple, the mesh body suit and boot combo is a tried and true look for the icon that always proves to be a hit, and the matching coat + accessories (bun chopsticks included) made Ms. Chun Li a fashion spectacle.

That’s all for my thoughts on the Pink Carpet looks, but let me know who you thought killed it!
